Yogi Bhajan,  Master of Kundalini Yoga –

the Yoga of Awareness,  Teacher of Teachers in the West

“I have come to create teachers, not gather students.”, Yogi Bhajan stated this as his mission in December of 1968

when he first came to the United States.  And create teachers is exactly what he dedicated his life to.

Throughout recorded history, a handful of spiritual giants have arisen as dynamic catalysts for the advancement of human consciousness.  Their revolutionary teachings and their very presence on the planet have accelerated the progress of millions of souls.  Such a master, a Teacher of teachers, was Yogi Bhajan.

He was not just a philosopher nor was he a preacher. He was a true Teacher in every sense of the word, encouraging others to attain the same mastery that he had achieved, and more. “Become ten times greater than me.”

Yogi Bhajan continues to create teachers today through his legacy, the Aquarian Teacher Program.  The relationship between master and student is not limited by time and space. Yogi Bhajan continues to create teachers through his Trainers and through his timeless teachings.

When alive he worked his mastery on every student who sat at his feet.  The relationship between a master and a student is like that of a chisel and a stone in the hands of a master craftsman. – Friction releases the potential to reveal the work of art contained within the stone.  The dimensions of life dramatically change as an individual accelerates to new levels of self-awareness when studying with a master.

Yogi Bhajan gave his first public lecture in the USA in Los Angeles on January 5, 1969.  Soon he was teaching at colleges and universities across the US, openly revealing the technology of Kundalini Yoga for the first time in history. He said, “It is your birthright to be healthy, happy, and holy.”

When he was just eight years old he was sent to begin his yogic training with the enlightened teacher, Sant Hazara Singh, who declared him to be a Master at the young age of sixteen and a half.

Throughout his academic career and government service in India, Harbhajan Singh taught yoga to people from all walks of life.

At the age of 39, he was impelled by his inner guidance to travel to the West and serve the generation of restless souls searching for Truth.

In July of 1969 3HO Foundation (Healthy, Happy, Holy Organization) was formally incorporated, and under his guidance as Director of Spiritual Education, 3HO mushroomed worldwide.  Traveling extensively in the ‘70s and ‘80s, Yogi Bhajan worked tirelessly to educate, uplift, and enlighten everyone he met.  The title and power of Mahan Tantric (Master of White Tantric Yoga) was bestowed on him in 1971 when the previous Tibetan Mahan Tantric left his body.

He fathered the science of Humanology, and in 1980 earned his Ph.D. with his dissertation "Communication: Liberation or Condemnation."  Communication was his forte, and opening hearts made him a much loved leader. His teaching method was to poke, provoke, confront, and then elevate – always with love and compassion. He had a deep understanding of each human being.  Following Yogi Bhajan’s directive, the Kundalini Research Institute was incorporated in 1976 to verify, preserve, and make available his teachings.  Over 500 new Kundalini Yoga  Level 1 teachers are trained annually by KRI’s International Aquarian Teacher Training Certification Program.

In 1994 the 3HO International Kundalini Yoga Teachers Association (IKYTA) was founded to serve the growing number of Kundalini Yoga teachers, who are now sharing Yogi Bhajan’s teachings in 42 countries.

Standing six feet three, Yogi Bhajan, had an unforgettable presence. He was fearless yet compassionate, dynamic and humorous, outspoken yet humble.  He received each individual with an openhearted acceptance. He believed that giving was God-like, and he truly exemplified generosity and selflessness.

Yogi Bhajan, know as Yogiji to hundreds of thousands worldwide, left his physical body on October 6th, 2004, at his home in Espanola, New Mexico.

He was 75 years old.  His mission "to create teachers, not collect students” will be well served by the organizations he created to uplift humanity via the vast body of his teachings, and by all those who following in his footsteps, make it their mission to share the art and science of Kundalini Yoga.
